1. What is the purpose of this event?
The Big Read is a national program created by the National Endowment for the Arts, Arts Midwest, and the Institute for Museums and Libraries, to restore reading to the center of American culture. Each year cities across the nation are selected to participate by reading a novel together. The book Orem will be reading in 2009 is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. 2. Where can I get a copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer?
Orem Public Library patrons can check out standard, large print, and audio editions of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. While supplies last, Orem residents may also pick up a free copy at the Orem Public Library, 58 North State Street in Orem, or at any of the Big Read events. For a calendar of events click here. Local bookstores will also be stocking copies of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Look for the Big Read display.

3. Is there a charge?
No, because of the generous support of our many contributors, all exhibits and events are offered to the public free of charge.

4. Will State Licensure Credit be offered for Utah Educators?
Yes. To receive one unit (15 hours) Utah educators can choose among the many events the library will be hosting. For each event (most run 90 minutes) the participant must sign the roll and submit a reflective essay detailing insights learned and how this new material will be applied in the classroom setting. To receive one unit you must attend 10 events. A documentary film screening Mark Twain: A film by Ken Burns may be substituted for two missed sessions. Come to the first session on September 14th and identify yourself as an educator attending the series for credit, fill out a short form, and we will take care of the rest. There is no tuition charge or fees, very little homework, and no required texts to buy. 5. Can I bring my children?
Children and their parents will enjoy the exhibits. While all of the events will be informative and engaging, we strongly encourage parents to carefully read the event descriptions or contact the General Reference area at 229-7175 for assistance in determining which events will be most suitable for your family.

6. Do I need to attend all of the events?
While all the events have a common theme, each session is independent. We are certain you will find every session enjoyable and enlightening.

7. How can I check out materials on the reading lists?
All of the materials listed are available at the Orem Public Library. There is a small fee for video checkout of $1/week. You just need to use your Orem or registered Provo library card. Many of these same materials are also available at Utah Valley University's library.

8. What hours are the Orem Library exhibits open?
The exhibits are open 9am to 9pm Monday-Friday and from 9am to 6pm on Saturday.

9. How long does the program run?
The Orem Big Read events run September 14 through October 16, 2009. For more information please click here to view our calendar of events.

10. How do I reserve copies of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for my book group?
Please call General Reference at 229-7175 to reserve a set of books for your book group. We also have knowledgeable volunteers available to lead a discussion when your group meets to discuss the novel.
